Fishing Forecast 5/10/16

Inshore

Snook are on the move to local inlets for the summer spawn. Jupiter and Palm Beach are always my favorites to fish in the kayak. There are multiple launch locations and the inlets are large enough to be safe.   Live mullet fished on the bottom and large DOA Terror Eyz are my favorites. June will also start the rainy season. Fishing the spillways when they are open around heavy rains can produce many snook. Again DOA Terror Eyz is a favorite, but don’t overlook a colorful buck tail.

Offshore

June will bring more days of calm seas and that means more days offshore. Blackfin tuna should become more consistent.  5-10lb fish are the norm while jigging off Palm Beach County.  Trolling 20ft Yozuri Crystal Minnows are also a great way to pick off a few. Getting out early will be your best bet to get on the kingfish bite. Live goggle eyes and blue runners are always the way to go. Don’t forget about the sailfish. Summer is still a great time to land this great fighting fish. Using the same live baits mentioned above will work just as well for the sailfish and mahi.

Fishing Forecast 4/9/16

Inshore

More and more bait will be moving into the river to supply our game fish with plenty to eat.  Bigger snook, trout, jacks and reds will be looking for mullet pattern baits like super spooks and large swimbaits. If you find glass minnows schools match the hatch with a DOA shad tail. If you find mullet, whip out a super spook or large swim bait. Structure is always key to finding fish. Try launching at the kayak launch on Lake Ave in Lake Worth. This launch will give you access to snook islands, the Lake Worth Bridge, seawalls and docks.

Offshore

It is that time of year when fishing is just on fire. Mahi will be closer to shore to give you a better shot at them. Larger kings will also be more abundant. Trolling live goggle eyes and runners will put fish in the yak. I like to fish slow, going only about 1.5 mph. This will keep slack out of your line as well as keep your baits swimming naturally. Mahi are one fish that always seem to give my clients trouble in regards to landing them. Remember to wear the fish out as much as you can if you plan on keeping it. Take the gaff shot, get it in the yak and quickly get your legs on top of the fish to make sure it doesn’t take one last jump right back into the water. Have fun out there!

Fishing forecast 3/10/16

Inshore

Spring is in full swing.  Glass minnows will be the bait to match the hatch this month. Artificial baits like DOA Cal Shad Tails, jerk bait and terror eyes will work well around the mangroves docks and bridges. Launching your kayak inside the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park should produce trout and snook along the mangroves when the tide is moving.

Offshore

April will start to bring bigger pushes of blackfin tuna to the area.  Vertical jigging 230-350 feet will produce on 4-8lbers on average. Don’t overlook trolling plugs like Yozuri Crystal Minnows to pick up a few tuna as well.  One place great place to start to look for tuna is Boynton Inlet. This launch allows you to reach the fishing grounds within a mile of shore.  Sailfish, mahi, kings and wahoo are all on the menu this time of year. Working the normal goggle eyes and blue runners will give you the best shot at a hook up.  Finally don’t forget about the cobia. Bouncing the reef will put you in line for one of these tasty fish.

Fishing Forecast 2.10.16

Inshore

March is here! Clean water and grass flats will most likely be more difficult to find with the Lake Okeechobee releases.  Try fishing more structure like docks, bridges and mangrove to locate your fish. Focus your time on points in the mangrove line and docks with the most current. Throwing DOA shad tails and jerk baits will work well.

Offshore

Fishing will start to pick up this month with larger kingfish and more mahi swimming in our waters. The sailfish bite will continue to be good as well fishing goggles eyes from 90-180’. Always be on the lookout for rip lines and color changes.  Setting up in these areas will bring you greater success without the work of trolling around. Cobia in March has always been good for us. These fish will start to move from the beach to the reef line. Fishing Jupiter to Delray Beach reefs bouncing the bottom with jigs, sardines and pilchards are your best bets.  Put your time in and you should find a few.

Fishing Forecast 1.10.16

Inshore

February is a good time to target a lot of different species. From Pompano, Jacks and sheepheads around deeper cuts to snook, reds , flounder and trout on the flats and structure.  Launching at Sawfish Bay Park in Jupiter will give you quick access to great pompano flats and docks for snook. The snook in this area can be picky so small baits are best and a fly rod even better. During this time the water is a lot colder than most of the year. When fishing the flats, hit the water a little later in the day and target sand holes and areas with dark mud. These spots will warm quicker than surrounding areas and should be holding fish.  Remember snook season opens February 1.

Offshore

The cobia will start to move into the beaches following around the rays, sharks and turtles. I like to have a DOA Swimming Mullet ready to pitch to them when spotted.  Sailfish, wahoo and dolphin will also still be frequent catches in February. Look for these 3 to be found from 90-120 feet chasing goggle eyes, runners and pilchards. Remember to watch the weather closely as launching in the winter things can change quick offshore.
