Fishing Forecast 2.10.16

Inshore

March is here! Clean water and grass flats will most likely be more difficult to find with the Lake Okeechobee releases.  Try fishing more structure like docks, bridges and mangrove to locate your fish. Focus your time on points in the mangrove line and docks with the most current. Throwing DOA shad tails and jerk baits will work well.   

Offshore

Fishing will start to pick up this month with larger kingfish and more mahi swimming in our waters. The sailfish bite will continue to be good as well fishing goggles eyes from 90-180’. Always be on the lookout for rip lines and color changes.  Setting up in these areas will bring you greater success without the work of trolling around. Cobia in March has always been good for us. These fish will start to move from the beach to the reef line. Fishing Jupiter to Delray Beach reefs bouncing the bottom with jigs, sardines and pilchards are your best bets.  Put your time in and you should find a few.

Inshore

February is a good time to target a lot of different species. From Pompano, Jacks and sheepheads around deeper cuts to snook, reds , flounder and trout on the flats and structure.  Launching at Sawfish Bay Park in Jupiter will give you quick access to great pompano flats and docks for snook. The snook in this area can be picky so small baits are best and a fly rod even better. During this time the water is a lot colder than most of the year. When fishing the flats, hit the water a little later in the day and target sand holes and areas with dark mud. These spots will warm quicker than surrounding areas and should be holding fish.  Remember snook season opens February 1.

Offshore

The cobia will start to move into the beaches following around the rays, sharks and turtles. I like to have a DOA Swimming Mullet ready to pitch to them when spotted.  Sailfish, wahoo and dolphin will also still be frequent catches in February. Look for these 3 to be found from 90-120 feet chasing goggle eyes, runners and pilchards. Remember to watch the weather closely as launching in the winter things can change quick offshore.

Fishing Forecast 12/8/15

Inshore

Pompano, bluefish, jacks and Spanish mackerel become more of the focus in January. I like to target areas near the inlets like the mouth of the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter and Sailfish Flats in Stuart. These areas provide deeper channels and sand flats for the above mentioned species to swim in and out with the tides. Try working the edges of these channels with goofy jigs, small buck tails and D.O.A. Shrimp. With colder weather comes colder water and wind. It’s a great idea to get a pair of waders to keep you warm and dry from waves and spray on windy days

Offshore

January is considered one of the best months to target sailfish, but what turns the bite on is the hard Northeast winds. If you can time a trip just before the wind or right after you should end up with a nice day. Sailfish prefer smaller baits like smaller goggle eyes, pilchards or finger mullet. Keeping them up top on the surface and frisky is your best bet. Kite fishing can be done in a kayak, but in my opinion keep it simple. Flat lined baits as I mentioned will do just fine.

Inshore

Well i'd like to hope December will bring some cold fronts, but we will have to see since November felt like June. Coming into the winter months when water temps drop targeting areas that warm quickly like docks, mangroves and potholes will be the best bet. We do a lot of sight fishing this time of year when the water clears and finding pot holes is a breeze. Standing in a kayak drifting a flat is a great way to see your targets. Not all kayaks are stable enough to stand in if fished stock from the store. There are a couple companies that offer outriggers that can be rigged to most yaks to help with stability.

Offshore

Winter month opportunities in the kayak are always weather dependent. If there is a day where the seas allow you to get out, take advantage of it. Sailfish, mahi, kings and wahoo should be your targets. As usual goggle eyes and blue runners will be your best options. Keeping live bait in a kayak is easier than most people think.  All you need is a 5 gallon bucket and an aerator to keep 6 baits healthy. The normal depths should be strong this time of year. Try trolling by zig zagging 90-150’. Finally don’t forget your flag or another type of visual device to keep yourself seen between the waves.

Inshore

November brings cooler weather and the opportunity to fish all day without having the sun affect you or the fish. Snook, redfish and trout will all be cooperating this month. I love to use the kayak to get to an area to wade. Wade fishing gives you the opportunity to become even more stealthy by getting away of the noise of the kayak hull. Fishing mangrove lines and potholes using a DOA shrimp is my go to option. The shrimp skips well to reach the roots of the mangroves where fish may be lurking. When working the shrimp over potholes toss the lure beyond the hole and work it out of the grass and into the sand. A few good twitches and a nice thump should come your way.  

Offshore

It’s the time of year when the wind should always be on your mind. Northeast winds will start to push through making the surf a little rough. When you hit the beach and see that the surf is rough, take some time and watch the waves. Most of the time you can see there is a pattern of a few big sets and a calm period. Time it out right and stay dry. Fish will start to move in shallow as the cold fronts push through. Look to target mahi, kings and sails in the 80-120’ area. As always gogs will be your best bet for live bait. If you are on a budget grab your favorite plugs and frozen sardines. We have caught many sailfish, mahi and kings on dead sardines.

Fishing Report 8/10/15

Inshore

Early angler gets the fish. Fishing early or late in the day is still the key through September. The flats and inlets are holding large amounts of glass minnows. Using lures to imitate these baits will be your best bet. Fishing the inlets, docks and bridges will continue to be a great option. Try using a DOA Terror Eyz or jerk bait bounced near the bottom around the inlet. Fishing the shadow lines on the bridges at night with a mullet imitation will work great. On the flats work the mangroves around high tide with a bait that can be skipped up under the overhanging branches. These fish will be up in there deep getting out of the heat of the day.

Offshore

September is the month for us and wahoo. Almost all the wahoo caught in my career have been in September. Concentrate on live baiting large goggle eyes deeper in the water column. The best time of the month will be a few days before and after the full moon. Kingfish will still be around and will most likely be staying in that 20lb range. Don’t forget about sailfish. September is a great month for them. Smaller live baits like goggle eyes and blue runners will work best on a flat line. Finally balckfin tuna will come through in spurts. Look to target them with smaller vertical jigs and trolling feathers.
