Fishing Report 3/10/14

Inshore

The Stuart and Fort Pierce areas are still holding decent numbers of pompano. Target areas close to the inlets and deeper channels throwing a DOA shrimp. The water has been semi-clear so try using more natural colors in either the 3 or 4 inch shrimp. Fort Pierce has been holding a few reds in the upper slot. Working the mangroves with a jerk bait or DOA shrimp will do the trick. Trout fishing has gotten a little better with more school size trout being caught. Some of the bigger gals are on the flats, but not always cooperative. Finally as always this time of year the bluefish, lady fish and jacks are out there to put a bend in your rod.

Offshore

There has been some consistent action on the dolphin off Palm Beach and Boynton Beach. Slow trolling a goggle eye or blue runner will get their attention. Sailfish are still being caught in good numbers up and down the coast. Again slow trolling a live bait will bring these guys to the yak. Kings were in good numbers the last few days off Jupiter and Palm Beach. Live bait rigged on a 50lb wire stinger rig is the way to go with these guys. 15-25lb fish have been common and a few bruisers in the 50+lb range are lurking. The one time we were able to get offshore the past two weeks we focused on Cobia. It was a little slow, but we had success with a 25lber. Drifting in the 40-60' range of Stuart is a good area to start looking. Look for sharks, turtles, and manta rays with anything following close behind. I like to bounce the bottom with a DOA swimming mullet while drifting a live bait and keeping an eye out for anything on the surface. Finally, if all else fails hit the reefs of Hobe Sound and Stuart for consistent spanish mackerel action. Their has been larger ones moving through this last week and are always a fun catch on light tackle.

Fishing Report 2/23/14

Inshore

Pompano fishing has been pretty productive as of late. Fishing the flats close to an inlet will provide you the best opportunity. We have got them on both incoming and outgoing tides. DOA shrimp in watermelon glitter has been the go to lure. The trout bite has been good in the Fort Pierce area. Slot size fish have been caught in good numbers with some gator trout almost every trip. Popping a DOA shrimp in pot holes has worked well. Redfish have been hit and miss, but you can find these guys close to the mangroves right now. Try throwing a DOA jerk bait or, my favorite, a DOA shrimp up close to mangroves during the higher tides.

Offshore

Sailfish have been caught in good numbers in the Boynton Beach and Delray areas. A live blue runner or goggle eye hooked to a 7/0 circle hook and 40lb fluorocarbon will do the trick. Dolphin are also still being caught off Boynton Beach. We had a few good days of really nice weed lines in the 250-350' areas. The same bait set up will work for these guys. Cobia are also starting to show up in good numbers. Try drifting the reefs in 60-80' in the southern region bouncing a DOA swimming mullet. In the Stuart area look to target 50-60' drifting blue runners and have a pitch rod ready with a swimming mullet tied on for passing fish.

Fishing Report 2/9/14

Inshore

Finally the water temp has dropped and the pompano are in the river. Both Fort Pierce and Stuart areas have been producing for us. Look for these fish to be holding around large pot holes and channel edges. We have had the most success with working a DOA shrimp. There have also been some 18" cookie cutter trout in the same areas. In the Stuart area Redfish have been in decent numbers on the flats during higher tides. Both the Trout and redfish have been taken on DOA shrimp as as well as Cal shad tails. Concentrate on looking for these sandy areas (pot holes) during midday, as fish are trying to warm up with the cooler water temps.

Offshore

If you are looking for constant action there is no better place to hit right now than Pecks Lake of Hobe Sound. The Spanish mackerel are thick and willing to hit anything that has a flash to it. Venturing further south to Boynton Beach the dolphin bite has been decent with a least a hook up each trip. There has also been some 3-4lb blackfin tuna anywhere from 190-300'. Try trolling around a DOA Terror Eyz or some other smaller baits for the balckfin.  Focus for us will soon switch to Cobia in the coming weeks. Hope to have some good reports.

Fishing Report 12/16/13

Inshore

The trout bite has slowed this past few weeks. With the water cooling and water clarity diminishing it's expected. We have still got on a few nicer trout in the 25" range , but the numbers are low. Look to fish the docks and mangroves for some consistent action of redfish, sheepshead and trout. DOA shrimp is always a favorite this time of year. Hopefully we will get a good cold front for a few days to bring in the pompano.

Offshore

Sailfish and dolphin are the targeted species for the next few months. We have had luck off Boynton Beach in 120-150'  for sailfish on live goggle eyes. For dolphin we have pushed out a little further to 300' to get on them. Goggle eyes and mullet work great on a flat line for the dollies.

Fishing Report 11/21/13

Inshore

Trout have been the main target on the flats and drop offs for us these past weeks. Focus on 4-5 foot of water on outgoing tides around Ft. Pierce. The D.O.A.  4" shrimp has worked well. If you are just looking to bend a line there is plenty of lady fish and jacks in the Saint Lucie inlet area. Any lure worked fast will entice a bite from these greedy creatures. Snook fishing around the bridges in Stuart and Fort Pierce has been hit and miss. Try throwing D.O.A. Terror Eyz in the "Big one" size up current around the structure and slowly reel in. Also with the rain today and tomorrow try your local spillways with the same technique. Finally don't forget about the sheepshead bite. Grab some live shrimp and hit the docks and bridge pilings almost anywhere to find some consistent action.

Offshore

The weather has kept us off the beach the last few weeks. Reports of a good dolphin bite off Boynton Beach and Palm Beach has been the norm almost everyday. Live finger mullet works well drifting and slow trolling, but always remember to have a pitch bait like a D.O.A. Terror Eyz or Baitbuster for cruising fish. We are getting into the prime time of year for sailfish. In the coming weeks I will be trying kite fishing from the yak for the first time, so look for a report in the coming weeks.

Fishing Report 11/4/2013

Inshore

We are getting into my favorite time of year to fish the lagoon. With every cold front the chance of pompano gets better and better. Once the water temp drops start to look for these guys on channel edges. I love trowing a D.O.A. shrimp to entice a bite.

These last few weeks we have had a few weak cold fronts which have started to push the trout and snook to deeper water. We found a good amount of trout on drop offs around the river in the 4-6' range. Try pitching a D.O.A. shrimp in Figi Chicken. I like using the 1/2 oz size to give me a little more distance when casting. Your best bet for snook is to hit the bridges as night as well as lighted docks. I like using D.O.A. swimming mullets on the bridges and tossing D.O.A. shrimp or Cal jerk baits under docks. Redfish can be found along the mangroves throughout the day. Also try looking for them on the flats midday when the sun has brought up the water temp.

Offshore

My main target has been the dolphin in the Jupiter area these last few weeks. For us it is a good pedal, but it is worth the reward. Look for weeds and rips in the 100-130' range. Drift or slow troll live bait while scanning the water for fish. I like to have a D.O.A Terror Eyz or Baitbuster ready to pitch to cruising fish. Don't be surprised to pick up a sailfish in the same area, as they have been thick as well. Bottom fishing has been really good in the Jupiter/Plam Beach area. Try bouncing a dead sardine on a standard bottom rig to catch mangrove, yellowtail and mutton.

Fishing Report 10/7/2013

Inshore

Mullet is all I have to say. Find them and you will find the fish. We have been fishing Hobe Sound to Palm Beach Inlet on the beach and inshore. Hitting the beach before sunrise will give you the best shot at snook, tarpon , sharks and spanish mackerel. Try throwing DOA airheads or 5.5" cal jerk baits into the schooling mullet. Of course don't forget to net some mullet to free line on a circle hook. In the river we have been fishing areas that are just stacked with mullet and it has been hard to get a bite on artificial or even a live bait. We switched tactics by using mullet heads on the bottom to pick off the lazy tarpon, snook and even trout.

Offshore

On September 28th I was lucky enough to take the top spot at the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament in Pompano Beach. My 34.3lb king fish taken at noon on a live blue runner was big enough to win big pelagic, king fish calcutta and 1st place overall. In the Boynton Beach area the live bait fishing has slowed once again. If your patient and stick it out you can pick off some nice kings in 80-120'. Grab your net and take some mullet out with your runners and goggle eyes as the pelagic's will pick them off just as well. The balckfin bite is still good on the jig, but the size quality has gone down. Most fish are running in the 2-4lb range.
