Fishing Report 8/26/13

Inshore

Fort Pierce is still the best bet for some inshore action. South of south bridge has produced some nice trout, sheepshead and mangrove snappers. A popping cork with live shrimp has worked best for the sheepshead and mangroves, while the DOA shrimp has done well for the trout. North bridge flats are producing large trout and lower slot reds on the incoming tide. Try using a DOA Airhead rigged weightless on a 5/0 hook. Jason Broach of Vero Beach actually took down the North Palm Beach Kayak Tournament fishing these fort pierce areas with a 81.25" slam. Also don't forget about the small tarpon still hanging around little and big mud creeks.  The DOA Terror Eyz continues to work best to entice a bite from these guys.

Offshore

We continued to live bait the last few weeks trying to get in on the wahoo bite and it paid off with a nice 25lber caught in 200'. We also has a few days with multiple sailfish caught anywhere from 120'-180' off Boynton Beach. The sails have been hitting blue runners as well as goggle eyes. There has also been an outstanding kingfish bite pretty much from 80' out to 200'. We found the larger kings (25lb+) to be coming from 180'-200'. Try rigging these live baits with 18 inches of 50lb wire tied to a 4/0 live bait hook and attaching a #4 extra strong treble as a stinger.

Inshore
Trout and Snook have been the main targets as of late. The flats north of Fort Pierce on the incoming tide have still been producing nice trout, snook and a few redfish. Just like the last few weeks the night bite has been best. DOA Airheads and Shad tails are your go to baits. There are still tarpon in Little Mud creek with the bigger ones hanging around Big Mud. Try Using DOA Terror Eyz and Swimming Mullet to entice these guys.

Offshore
These last few weeks we have concentrated on using live bait for the wahoo bite, but have had to battle off the sharks and sailfish. Most of the sailfish bites came on baits set at 40' below surface in 175-220' off Boynton Beach. If your looking to catch yourself a hammerhead, now is the time. We have been getting them while using live bait for wahoo, but any dead bait drifted from 220'-140' will get you on them. The vertical jig bite for blackfin tuna has picked up again. Still a lot of 3-5lbers but a few 20lbers have been in the mix.

Inshore
The fresh water runoff has made it tough lately in the Indian River Lagoon.  South of Fort Pierce has still been producing good size trout. Try throwing DOA Airheads and Shrimp in 2-4' of water. The flats north of Fort Pierce inlet on the incoming tide has been good during the early morning for redfish. Venturing out at night has been even better in this area, just bring the bug spray. DOA Airheads and Shad Tails have worked best as the fish are focused on the mullet in that area. Don't forget about the tarpon in places like Little Mud creek, Bear Point and Big Mud. Get out early to find these fish rolling. Using DOA Terror Eyz and adding extra weight to a DOA shrimp will get you a bite from these guys. The key is to cast ahead of a rolling fish and get that bait to fall at the same rate the fish is diving.

Offshore
The water offshore has been a beautiful blue this last week. Early in the week we have found schools of peanut dolphin every trip out in 180-210' of water. Have a pitch bait ready like a DOA Terror Eyz to bring of few of these guys in the boat. Lately the vertical jig bite for balckfin tuna has slowed, but they are still out there. Try trolling smaller baits in 160-220' for these 3-5lb fish. Again a Terror Eyz is a good option. The king fish bite has been hit and miss for us. Slow trolling live goggle eyes and blue runners are your best bet, but we have also had some good success with deep diving plugs in 110-140'.

The full moon is coming up this weekend, i see some good fish being caught this week. Good luck out there!

Lousiana Trip

Jason Broach, John Hoke and I headed up to LA for the IFA Kayak Fishing Championship on Oct 30th. The plan was to pre-fish two days before the two day tournament. After the 12hr drive and nice traffic ticket, we arrived in Chalmette. First day of pre-fishing wasn't looking good. I was the only one to even catch a fish. Day 2 turned out a lot better as we were able to locate reds and trout. I ended up catching my personal best Redfish at 38.75". When the first day of the tournament came around we were pretty confident. Well when the day ended I sat in lower 20th place. We were able to catch two fish, but couldn't get on the big reds. Day two of the tournament started great by landing both fish in the first hour including a 21" trout which is big for the area. By 10am I had upgraded my Red to 34.75", but was still looking to upgrade as we were on a school of large reds. The day ended with no upgrade. I was a little disappointed, but for never fishing the area i could not complain. I ended up 14th overall and Jason squeaked into 13th. Great time with good friends.
